A Valuable Find at the QFHS

While volunteering one day at the Quebec Family History Society, I decided to take a look at a large, rolled-up document because it had an Honor Roll on it. It turned out to be The Standard Publishing Company Limited’s Canada’s Aid to the Allies and Peace Memorial special edition. Editor: Frederic Yorston.

What an incredible document! No-one had realized it was there!

Canada's Aid to the Allies and Peace Memorial is a 152 page post-WWI publication focusing on what the various provinces, people, and companies had done to help the Allied cause during World War I. Published in Montreal, the majority of ads are for companies in the Montreal area with a sprinkling of major industries from coast to coast.

This remarkable monograph is large, approximately 19.5 inches wide by 23.5 inches high. Due to its age (about 92 years) and condition, it is very difficult to copy. Eventually, assuming it is in the public domain, all pages will be photographed.

In coming weeks, I will be posting a list of the contents, page by page. The Rolls of Honor will be transcribed and uploaded to my site. Currently, I am also working on indexing the entire document.

Some of the many treasures it holds are:

-More than 50 Rolls of Honor, some full pages with hundreds of names;

-Images of Canadian Military Training Camps across Canada spread across two pages with photos of many individual officers and photographs of entire battalions taken before leaving camp;

-Images of Reviews of soldiers at Valcartier and on the Salisbury Plains;

-Images taken at Vimy Ridge;

-Images of the ships that took the 1st Canadian Expeditionary Force to England;

-Pages dedicated to each province;and,

-Letters from Provincial Premiers stating their province's contributions to the war effort.

I cannot wait to get the information on my site!
