J.V. Waddell's Obituary - 1965


Resident of Ste. Rose

James Waddell, a resident of Ste. Rose for the past thirty-four years passed away in hospital after a short illness. (See Death Certificate) He was in his 67th year.

A Soldier

Born in Glasgow, Scotland, he served in the Imperial army in the first World War and in the 6th Hussars Reserve during the last war.

Promoting English Education

Mr. Waddell, since coming to Ste. Rose, worked diligently with his fellow citizens on the Isle Jesus to establish the first Protestant and English School on the island north of Laval des Rapides. This was no small task. This had to be done by what was known as dissention from the Roman Catholic Board. The first school house was at Ste. Rose station and it was soon outgrown. The children then went to Ahuntsic School before the Nadon Street School was finally built for elementary students. Mr Waddell served as chairman of the board for ten years. He was also president of the Quebec Association of Protestant School Boards for three years. In this capacity he attended conventions of the Canadian Association in Halifax and Vancouver. This tribute was paid him by the members of the Q.A.P.S.B. "His interest and zeal which he contributed to this position has a great bearing on the success of education to-day".

Retirement

Mr. Waddell retired two years ago from the Bell Telephone Company where he was plant supervisor. The Waddells were to celebrate their 40th wedding anniversary next April.

Besides his wife, he leaves two sons, Keith and Graham, a daughter, Joyce Mrs. Townsend, nine grandchildren, a brother Archie in England and a sister, Mrs. James Graham in Glasgow, Scotland.
